RNLI: Safety, Maintenance & an Adventure around the British Coastline

The RNLI: Saving Lives at Sea. Established almost 200 years ago, the charity was founded in 1824 by Sir William Hillary whose aim was to provide a 24/7 search and rescue lifeboat service run, where possible, by volunteers and funded by voluntary donations.

World renowned for its service, the charity has 238 stations around the British coastline and has saved over 143,000 lives at sea since inception, countless more through its youth education, training, and water safety work.

Wessex Electricals have partnered with RNLI for many years with an ongoing programme of works and our teams work brilliantly together to ensure that the stations are all fully safe and compliant.

Recently, the RNLI came to us with a slightly different and interesting project; safety and maintenance checks and assessments for many of their stations around the British coastline. A fantastic opportunity for us, our Senior Engineer David jumped at the chance and with the logistical expertise of our very experienced coordinator Sam, set off on his journey around the British coastline.

He shared these stunning pictures of his trip with our office-based staff each day, all of whom were fascinated and somewhat envious. A particular challenge were the outlying stations around Scotland where logistics were challenging given their remote locations. These though proved to be some of the most interesting and scenic locations of the project.

After three months of (sea)planes, trains, a variety of automobiles, ferries and a fair few nights on remote islands facing the prospect of camping, we are delighted to say that all checks, assessments, and reports were completed, verified and received on time by the RNLI.

We were delighted to receive the following feedback about our team from RNLI Electrical Technician in Poole, Rich Thompson who said:

“Thanks again for your support, all the team have been great working really hard, (they didn’t ask me to say that). Shane is a machine, he was working quicker than the wholesalers could get gear to site, cracking bunch of guys.”

A unique and important project for a unique and important client.

Below are a few of the images from the adventure.
